  Bike club gets time on agenda

We commend Mayor Jim Ridenour for putting time on tonight's Modesto City Council agenda for the Most Envied motorcycle club to air their complaints against law enforcement. Some club members and people from other clubs showed up last Tuesday, making an imposing presence in the generally quiet council chambers. We have no way of knowing whether their complaints of police harassment are legitimate. We do know that biker gangs such as the Hell's Angels have earned their bad reputation because of criminal behavior, and the presence of some Hell's Angels at the meeting was disconcerting. On the other hand, not everyone who wears a black vest and rides a motorcycle is a criminal. How the public will judge the club members will be determined in part by how they present themselves tonight. The mayor is providing a public forum for a public issue. It could well be one of the most interesting council meetings of recent years. The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. in the basement of Tenth Street Place. It is televised live on Comcast Channel 7.
